Why Is My Upstairs Always Hot?
If your first floor feels comfortable while your upstairs feels several degrees warmer, you’re not imagining things. Temperature differences between floors are common, especially during the hottest part of summer.
Some of this comes down to basic physics: warm air rises, and upper floors receive more heat from the roof and attic. However, a consistently hot second floor can also point to airflow problems, inadequate insulation, leaky ductwork, or an HVAC system that isn’t well suited to the home.

1. Warm Air Naturally Rises

7. One Thermostat Is Controlling the Entire House
In many two-story homes, the thermostat is located downstairs. Once that area reaches the selected temperature, the system shuts off—even if the second floor is still too warm.
Turning the thermostat lower may cool the upstairs eventually, but it can make the first floor uncomfortable and increase energy use.
